How it plays

Buchmacher is a racing game for one to four, played with chips that carry no cash value: before every race, everyone bets blind on one of four or five horses, and each horse's odds are worked out from its form and the distance. Then the field gallops around the oval track like an old racing arcade machine, with stumbles and whip cracks along the way, and whoever backed the winner gets their stake times the odds. Two sprints over 1,400 metres, two classics over 2,100 and the Grand Prix over 2,800 to finish: after five races, whoever has the most chips in front of them wins.

Goal and rules

Goal Most money

Bet smart and have the most money after five races!

What counts is net worth: chips minus credit. Anyone with no chips before a race gets 25 credit. Anyone who doesn't bet in time automatically bets the minimum on the favourite.

  1. Betting Before each race, everyone places chips on a horse at the same time. You only see what the others bet once the race starts.
  2. Form The form report says how well a horse is running today: from "Didn't sleep well" to "Unstoppable".
  3. Race Every race has its distance: 1,400 m is eight beats, the 2,800 m Grand Prix sixteen. Each beat, every horse jumps zero, one, or two lengths; whoever's ahead at the end wins, a tie is settled by photo finish.
  4. Payout Whoever bet on the winner gets stake times odds back. Everyone else loses their stake.

Odds: Every quote is calculated from the horse's real chance of winning over the race's distance, with a ten percent markup for the bookmaker, rounded down to the nearest tenth and never below 1.1. Outsiders come through more often in a sprint, the favourite more often in the Grand Prix.

Controls

Tap or click: a stake on your horse's lane — Min, Half or All. The tap is the bet; it counts at once. With a keyboard: Tab and Enter.

In the arena, the goal and the rules are always behind the question mark, even mid-round — and between rounds, so is the story.
