A co-op adventure from the world of Operation Hardcover

Die Luftnummer

The Day Before Operation Hardcover

Monday, eight o’clock, Bockenheim. Ruth drops a brand-new hardcover into the bath, thirty-five marks, clothbound. It floats. Books don’t float.

You play four fixed characters: Ruth, Ansgar, Selma and Nuri. Each sees the same world differently, and each can do something none of the others can. Alone, in twos or in threes, one seat holds several characters and switches between them.

One to four players · each on their own device; you talk across the table or over the phone.

Duration: 80–120 min. (Pause any time – the table saves the crew’s progress automatically.)

Playable multiplayer & solo. Recommended for PC, laptop and tablet in landscape.

Scene from the game: Ruth, Ansgar and Selma in the flatshare, with the sentence line and the verbs below them.
Chapter 1 · The flatshare, eight in the morning

Open a table

Join a table

Anyone who has left the round gets back to the same seat with the same name.

Back with a case code

Eight characters from the case file in the game. They bring you back to your seat on any device, with no account and no password.

The Crew

  • Ruth Kalander

The Roller · own verb: Tinker

Sees mechanics: what sticks, what’s missing and which screw is different from the others.

  • Ansgar Pleite

    Galley · own verb: Read

Reads text. Where he sees a sentence, the others see only letters.

  • Selma Golder

Gilt Edge · own verb: Inspect

Sees material: fibre, glue, seals and gold that isn’t.

  • Nuri Wendt

Check Digit · own verb: Count

Reads digits and only digits. Throughout the game, numbers appear for Nuri alone.

Privacy

Die Luftnummer stores as little as possible. There is no account, no password, no email address and no cookie.

On the server there is one file per table: the nicknames at the table, a random pass for each seat — stored only as a checksum —, the seats chosen, the time of joining, the language of the table and the game state, that is, where the characters are standing, what they are carrying and what they have said and noted. The file is not kept in a database but in a folder of its own on the server. Because a case is often played over several evenings, a table lasts up to thirty days; if nobody touches it for fourteen days, it is deleted. Cleaning up happens whenever someone uses this game, at most every ten minutes.

The case code in the case file is not an account: it consists of the room code and three characters calculated from the room code and the seat. Whoever types it in is back in their seat; nothing extra is stored for this.

For the abuse brake, your IP address is counted only as a salted checksum that cannot be reversed, and it is discarded after an hour at the latest. The address itself is stored nowhere.

In your browser: localStorage holds luftnummer.faelle (room code, pass, nickname and chapter of at most five cases in progress, so that the start page can offer them to you again) and luftnummer.klang (whether the sound is on). The tab’s sessionStorage holds luftnummer.sitzung (room code and pass), luftnummer.aktiv (which character you played last), luftnummer.dossier (whether the dossier is open) and, for each table, an entry recording which eureka picture you have already seen. A case in progress disappears from the list as soon as it has been played to the end.

The “Copy link” and “Share case file” buttons put the address on your clipboard or open your device’s share dialog. As long as you don’t choose an app there, nothing leaves your device.

Audience measurement: we count visits to this page with Matomo on a server we run ourselves, without cookies and without recognising anyone across visits. Stored are the page visited, the date and time, the referring page and rough details of browser and device. The IP address is shortened and not stored in plain text. The legal basis is our legitimate interest (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR) in seeing whether this game is found and played. Nothing is passed on to third parties, which is why no consent banner is needed.

The footer links to liesener.de and, where configured, to donation services such as PayPal, Ko-fi or Buy Me a Coffee. These are links, not embeds: as long as nobody taps them, no request goes there. Whoever taps one leaves this game, and the other service sees their IP address, but not which page they came from.

There is no advertising, no fonts, images or videos from other servers, and nothing is passed on. The sound is generated in the browser; there is no audio file. The voice connection you talk over is not part of this game.

Who is responsible is stated in the Legal Notice.
