Jule, Knolle, and the Blind Roll: Why Schocken Forgives No Mistakes

Did you know?

The tavern dice classic where three ones instantly sweep the entire table.

Schocken is Germany's legendary pub dice duel: three dice, a leather cup, 13 coasters, and zero room for careless play. Whoever rolls the lowest combination takes coasters from the central stack. Whoever takes the last coasters from the stack loses the half — and whoever loses the round buys the next round of drinks.

The single biggest beginner mistake is greed. The lead player dictates the maximum rolls for the round (up to three). If you roll an average hand on roll one, rolling again is often suicide: you rarely improve, but you grant every opponent behind you two extra attempts. In a tie, the player who used fewer rolls always wins.

The hand hierarchy decides the table's fate:

  • Shock Out (three ones in a single roll): Instantly ends the pass around the table. The lowest roller must take every coaster left in the stack at once.
  • Shock (two ones): Yields coasters matching the third die (a Shock Six hands out 6 coasters).
  • General (three of a kind): Worth 3 coasters.
  • Straight (three in a row, such as 4-5-6): Worth 2 coasters.
  • House numbers: Pure descending values (e.g. 6-5-2 is 652).

Blindly rolling the dice without calculating the coaster count guarantees defeat before the final penalty mark is even chalked.
